Channel 4 – Black Mirror ‘San Junipero’
Amid the dark dystopia of Black Mirror’s world, “San Junipero” stands out as one of the most uplifting, celebratory episodes. Tracing the meeting of Kelly and Yorkie, it’s a love story that spans eras as well as dimensions. Much of the action takes place on a simulated 1980s California party scene, so the clubs needed to give off that nostalgic aesthetic.
Kemp London kitted out the set with full neon in a panoply of colours and shapes, from the trim around the walls and the decorative artworks to the exterior signage. This included multiple bespoke pieces. The result was bold, retro décor in every frame of the club scenes and lighting that infused the set with colour.
“San Junipero” received huge critical acclaim and remains one of the episodes that leaves the strongest visual impressions long after the credits have finished rolling. We’re delighted to have had a hand in bringing its colourful 80s revelry to life. If you haven’t seen Charlie Brooker’s foreboding sci-fi anthology yet, do yourself a favour and hibernate for a binge-watch.
