Understanding the difference between neon and fluorescent light signs
13.03.2017
Neon and fluorescent lights are remarkably similar but have some important differences. The biggest of these is the type of gas that is used in the glass tubes. With neon a wide array of different gases can be employed, either on their own or as a mix. When electric current is ran through them the atoms create a coloured light.
The glass tubes of fluorescent lights are filled specifically with low pressure mercury vapour. When a current is fed through this it emits UV. By adding a phosphor coating to the inside of the tubing this energy can be transformed into visible light. This occurs because the phosphor fluoresces, giving them their name.
As a result the big difference between the two is that it is the gas in the neon that gives off the light whereas it is the phosphor in the fluorescent. It is important to know this when choosing between which lights to opt for when creating a bespoke sign.
When you think of fluorescent lights its likely you will think of the strip lighting found in offices, shops, and various public buildings. The lighting is also used to create signs.
